Introduction

LuninuX OS is a GNU/Linux distribution that comes pre-installed with essential application you need everyday; it is based on Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com), which is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian, another distribution that is based on the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel. Ubuntu is a product of Canonical Ltd and it has been the backbone of many GNU/Linux distribution such as LuninuX OS, Linux Mint, Pinguy OS and many more…It is one of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions and is continuing to gain popularity rapidly.

  • History
    • What started as a hobby mid November 2010 by the alias aBsolutex3 at XDA-Developers is now know as LuninuX OS. My interest in Linux began in October 2007 when I stumble upon Ubuntu, I skimmed a few articles on where to download; I read a paragraph about the project then went to the download page; browsed the ISO files and downloaded ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) from my Windows XP machine with a single-core AMD Athlon x64 processor. I burned the ISO file to a Phillips 700MB CD-R with InfraRecorder. I restarted my computer and I was prompted if I wanted to install Ubuntu, use the Live CD and a few other options, I selected to use the Live CD and I was impressed when I saw the desktop, I then went ahead to browse the system and finally I decided to install it, at the time I knew very little of what I was doing but I did it anyway, I answered a few question from the installer and I wiped my harddrive; I was asked by the installer to restart my machine, so i did, the CD just eject from the optical drive and I took it out and hit enter. I arrived at when I know now as GRUB bootloader. I realized all my files where gone when the system booted. Over the next few months, I learn to adapt to the desktop and found many useful skills, including multi-booting and file recovery. Over the years I learn to do many things with my computer, I explored the OSX86 project, and many of the GNU/Linux distribution; BackTrack, OpenSUSE, Fedora, FreeBSD, PC-BSD, Mandriva, Sabayon Linux, Knoppix, xPUD, etc. In 2010 I received my first Android phone and I quickly rooted it. After a couple months with the phone I started to mod ROM’s for it. In December 12, 2010 Sn0wL1nuX Sn0wL1nuX-x64.iso was uploaded to Megaupload and over the months there were upload to SourceForge. Sn0wL1nuX 10 was the first stable but 11 soon was release to fix a few problems. In time a friend from XDA-Developers, Emerson Levi, provided a hosting service for the project to be hosted. A few months after the project was submitted to DistroWatch undes the name Sn0wL1nuX,
    Lars Torben made a distribution and named it Snowlinux so I decided to change the name of my distro from Sn0wL1nuX to LuninuX OS to avoid any confusions. LuninuX OS release 11.10 in July and a few more releases after that, all of which can be downloaded from SourceForge.net

  • Help
    • Will it work with my hardware? LuninuX OS should work on a most desktops, laptops and netbooks too, machines that run Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Mac OS X will run LuninuX OS. If you have questions or a problem related to LuninuX OS, you should be able to get help from other users online, via forum, IRC, or you can email luninuxos@gmail.com. Feel free to register with the “LuninuX OS Forum” http://luninuxos.com/forum. You can also chat on IRC chat room on the “Help” page or use “XChat” in LuninuX OS, the chat room channel is #LuninuXOS if you connect to “irc.freenode.net”. Since LuninuX OS is based on Ubuntu, it use’s the Ubuntu repositories, so many of the software for Ubuntu are also available for LuninuX OS and articles, tutorials and many resources for Ubuntu can be used in LuninuX OS.


Installation

LuninuX OS is 100% free of charge to download… you can download it from SourceForge.net which come in an ISO file format, you can burn the file to a DVD or Copy it to a bootable USB storage but you always can purchase a premade LuninuX OS disk or USB and it will be mail to you in days. You can try LuninuX OS without making any change to your current Operating System in what is known as “Live CD“, “Live DVD” or “Live USB” mode.

  • Downloading
    • If you have the bandwidth, you can download LuninuX OS from SourceForge.net, simply navigate to http://sourceforge.net/projects/luninuxos/files and select the version number and download the corresponding architecture for your system, The download might take a while depending on your connection speed, it will be best to read about the new feature of the release, known problems, upgrading the previous release, etc…

    If you wish to help the project finacially, you can purchase a DVD or USB via download page and it will be mailed to you in a few days.

  • Burning ISO
    • So you have finished downloing the ISO image, what next? Well we need to put the image onto some sort of bootable storage; a blank media, i.e DVD or USB drive…

    In Windows, we can use InfraRecorder…Windows 7 has a build in tool we can take adavntage of as well.

    In Mac OS X, we can use Apple’s Disk Utility (Disk Copy in older versions).

    In LuninuX OS or any desktop based Linux distrubution, there will be plenty on opensource tools we can use… But we will use Brasero for now.

    • A good “rule of thumb” is that machines that could run Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Mac OS X will almost always run LuninuX OS. Simply try LuninuX OS as a live ssession first to check the hardware compatibility. Here is the Hardware specifications…

  • Minimum Hardware

    1. 1000MHz x86 processor
    2. 256MB plus 256MB Swap or more system memory (RAM)
    3. 10GB of disk space or more should work well
    4. Graphics card and monitor capable of 800×600
    5. CD/DVD-drive
    6. Sound support, if you need sound.
    7. Internet access is helpful

  • Recommended Hardware

    1. 2000MHz x86 processor
    2. 1024MB of system memory (RAM)
    3. 20GB of disk space works well
    4. Graphics card and monitor capable of 1024×768
    5. CD/DVD-drive/USB-port
    6. Sound support, Keyborad and Mice.
    7. Internet access.

  • Excellent Hardware

    1. 2500MHz dual-core x64 processor
    2. 2048MB or more system memory (RAM)
    3. More than 100GB of disk space
    4. Graphics card and monitor capable of 1280×768 or better
    5. CD/DVD-drive/USB-port
    6. Sound support, Keyborad and Mice.
    7. Internet access.

    The Ubiquity installer is the default application that will help you install the content of the Live CD to you Harddrive. the installation starts by asking you a preferd language, so go ahead and select the language you feel confortable with…the installation should look similar to the steps shown below.


Desktop

Gnome is the default desktop environment for LuninuX OS, it is a graphical user interface that runs on top of a computer operating system. It is composed entirely of free and open source software. Gnome is an international project that includes creating software development frameworks, selecting application software for the desktop, and working on the programs that manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management.

  • Dock

    • In LuninuX OS, the Dock is located at the bottom of the desktop, it is simply refer as Docky and it enable the user with a way of launching, switching between, and monitoring running programs or applications.

  • Panel

    • By Default, LuninuX OS has a top Panel for notification and can act as a highly configurable launcher and taskbar for Gnome.

  • Programs

    • The core application LuninuX OS provide is a Web browser, File manager, Audio editor, Email client, Disc manager, Text editor, Media player, Instant messenger client, Photo manager, Torrent client, Document processing, Video editor.   • File Manager

    • Nautilus file manager is provided as a default and essential part of LuninuX OS, it supports browsing local filesystems as well as filesystems available through the GVFS system, including FTP sites, Windows SMB shares, OBEX protocol often implemented on cellphones, Files transferred over shell protocol, HTTP and WebDAV servers and SFTP servers.


Application

Ubuntu Software Center is a utility for installing, purchasing, and removing software in LuninuX OS. Inaddition we can also use Synaptic Package Manager and Advanced Packaging Tool for a more detailed installation of applications.
